With the series tied at one game each, the two teams took to the floor in a highly anticipated Game 3. Many wondered whether this third game would follow the high scoring, lopsidedness that resulted in the first two games. However, both teams came out with some great intensity and several good scoring chances were put aside by Smithson and Mangat. Orange was given a power play with Blue captain Komianos heading to the box for tripping. While Orange maintained good ball control, they were kept to the outside where their shots were handled by Smithson. Midway through the second half, Blue was given a power play of their own with Paul Grewal heading to the penalty box, unimpressed by the tripping call. Blue set up quickly and had some excellent opportunities, none better than a blistering slap shot by the captain that beat Mangat, but hit the goal post. As it turned out, the rebound was dumped and Seroya had a partial break as he made a great move to elude the defender and take Smithson out of position, only to make an even better pass to a cruising Cole Gee who buried the short-handed goal. Blue remained aggressive with several face-offs in the Orange zone, but was unable to score the tying goal and as the buzzer went, Orange was crowned the 2008 Champs!
Thanks to both teams for a spectacular finals and special thanks to all the volunteers, timekeepers, referees, website administrators, players, and captains for making another season successful. Let the countdown to the 2009 PHL season begin!
Game 3, here we go! After the teams split the first two games, it will be winner take all in today‘s final game. The opening game of the series had Blue jump out to a lead and not look back. After Smithson made some early pressure saves to prevent Orange from scoring their first goal of the finals, Blue turned it up and buried their chances. Both Fraser and Sekhon seemed to control the offensive play and find open players like Tony and Mike Anderson who were quick to bury their opportunities. After all was said and done, Blue had taken a 1-0 series lead with a commanding 6-0 win.
Last night‘s game was a role reversal as Orange came out to fight off elimination and took it to Blue from the opening faceoff. Orange seemed to contain Blue‘s snipers while Orange‘s leaders scored on their chances. The final score was a 4-0 win by Orange. This sets up a great game 3 matchup for the PHL Cup tonight.
All players are reminded to come out for the awards and to return jerseys. Thanks.
The PHL Finals begin tonight at 7pm! Team Blue will host Team Orange in a battle of the top two teams from the regular season. If the regular season has any indication of the match-up, we should be see some great action as Orange was the league‘s top offensive team, while Blue was the league‘s top defensive team.
Storylines? Friends to Foes... During the 2006 Winter season, Blue Captain, Stelios Komianos and Orange Captain, Bobby Walker, co-captained Team Burgundy to the PHL Cup. Which one of them will join Laxx Sidhu as the only player to captain two different PHL Cup winners? In addition, there are several players vying for their first championship including Narinder Mangat and Raj Sidhu. Then there are those players who were heart broken in a Game 3 shoot out loss last season to Team Gold, including Dennis Smithson and Kam Mann, who are both looking for first cup wins. Players like Steve Seroya and Jimmy Minhas are looking to repeat as cup winners. Goalie Supremacy? It will definitely be a battle between the pipes. Both Kabir Mangat and Dennis Smithson have proven to be top goaltenders over the last several seasons, each of them winning the top goalie award individually once and sharing the honors with each other during the 2006 Winter season. Who gets the edge? When asked off the record, Smithson replied, "it doesn’t matter as long as my team wins". Mangat countered with, "Denny’s a great tender with a great glove hand, I just hope I‘m as quick with my championship ring weighing my glove hand down". Again, these were off the record comments.
Good luck to both teams this weekend and a reminder that awards will be handed out after the finals are concluded, either Saturday or Sunday. All others players are encouraged to come and watch…and return your jerseys for your refunds.
Blue 4-3
Orange 2-1
The second game between Blue and Red featured the return of Samir Dhanani in net. Red also outshot Blue but it wasn't enough for them to extend the series to a third and final game. Blue prevailed 4-3 and will take part in the 2008 PHL Cup Final.
Game 2 for Orange and Gold was another close one. Orange squeaks through to the Final with a low-scoring 2-1 victory over Gold, who will not be able to defend their title.
The 2008 PHL Cup Final begins Friday, July 11th at 7pm.
Blue 5-1
Orange 3-2
Tonight marked the begin of the PHL playoffs and Team Blue showed why they were the top team during the regular season as they handed Team Red a 5-1 loss in game 1. Blue's Dennis Smithson was great in goal once again and forward Gary Sekhon displayed his offensive talents in leading the team to victory. Red's Omar Rashid and Samir Dhanani were among notable absentees.
The second series featured Team Orange taking on defending champs Team Gold and this game was non-stop action from the opening faceoff to the buzzer. Early on it was the heroics of Gold goalie Vic Chahal who made some spectacular saves. Orange goalie Kabir Mangat also provided some excellent saves and had a late game saving spot. Orange struck first, but gave up two leads going late into the second half. However, this year's leading scorer proved to be clutch as he scored the game winner with less than five minutes to go in the game and Orange was able to win the opening game.
Game 2 in both series will continue Saturday, July 5th at 5pm.
