The 2010 season has come to an outstanding end. The finals concluded this past Saturday with Red capturing the PHL Championship Cup with a two game sweep of Gold .
Game 1 had Gold jump out to an early 2-0 lead. But Rav Nagra replied for Red followed by another Gold goal, which increased the margin back to two. Down 3-1, cue the Red comeback!!! First, Tony Dhaliwal sniped to get Red back in the game followed by Vinny Aurora burying the tying goal. Extra time would be needed for a third time during the 2010 playoffs. Overtime settled nothing and in the shootout, Red was able to secure the all important opening game victory as all three Red shooters scored (Tony, Omar, and Nav).
For game 2, the Cup was in the building while the champagne was on ice in the limo parked out front, so to speak. Both teams started play cautiously, but with everything to lose, Gold began to apply great pressure. But it was Red opening the scoring as co-captain Sonny Sidhu wired a shot just inside the red line. Gold replied with Sandeep Khangura burying a shot past goaltender Kevin Assels, but they would go down 2-1 shortly after as Vinny Aurora scored down low. Gold would tie things up again as Karndeep Singh scored. But again Red was up to the challenge as Sam Sidhu ripped a shot and the eventual cup winner past goaltender Jonathan Haynes from the top of the circle. Gold was unable to capitalize on powerplay opportunities despite a solid team performance.
This was the first time since the inaugural season of PHL that Red captured the championship and what a celebration they had. A text message was received at 1:13AM Sunday, stating “Cup was transported in a stretch limo accompanied by team Red to Met on 8th ave. where it sits at the main bar as we speak.” Here’s hoping to a safe Cup return for next season!
The awards ceremony followed immediately after the finals and the award winners will be posted shortly under the “Awards” link above. Any winners not in attendance will be given their awards in the upcoming weeks.
Here’s to a great season as the league would like to extend its’ appreciation to all the players and volunteers. We look forward to next season!

What a semifinals weekend?! Both series had displays of greatness and sheer domination by star players, which ultimately led to the finals that we have starting tomorrow night.
The series between Red and Burgundy turned out to quite simply be "the Omar and Company show”. Red seemed to just be too offensive and played a great team game as Omar Rashid controlled the pace of the game whenever he was on the floor. Like a magician, he waved his wand and it often led to one timer passes to sniper, Tony Dhaliwal, who showed his skill in ripping goals past Kabir Mangat. The game scores really did not reflect the dominance Red had and it’s no surprise that they will be playing for the championship. Even though they came up short, Burgundy had a great season and were consistently better than other teams, unfortunately they might be pondering “what ifs”, like what if they didn’t trade Omar to Red?
Top seed Gold went in against Orange short benched and the fourth seed did not take long to capitalize as they gained a 1-0 series lead after a dramatic shootout victory in game 1. Orange dominated for the most part in the opening game and looked like they would carry that momentum into game 2. And after leading for most of the game, some careless penalties would prove costly as Gold tied it up late and a shootout would be needed again. The series flip flopped to a tie on a great goal by rookie Amar Heer and the stage was set for a spectacular show by a long time veteran. Karndeep Singh dominated from the opening faceoff in the final game as he looked like a man possessed. Offensively, he was all over the score sheet, even when short-handed, he maintained ball possession. Alongside rookies Sandeep Khangura, Harpal Brar, Iqbal Brar, and veteran Allan Kuenstler, Karndeep led Gold into the finals with a 4 point performance. Now can Gold live up to the top seed rating in the finals and help Karndeep win only his second cup ever? Come watch the finals and find out!
The awards ceremony will follow the championship game, either Saturday or Sunday depending on the results.

Well the heat is on and so are the PHL playoffs! The semifinals begin tonight with neither of the 2009 finalists involved as both Blue and Teal were eliminated last weekend.
Top seed Gold will face off against surging Orange , who like the Flyers clinched a playoff spot with a win in their last game of the season, with a little help. The second semifinal features second place Burgundy facing off against team Red . Before looking at the match-ups, here’s a recap of how the playoff picture came to be.
Last weekend’s first game between Red and Orange began and ended with Orange dominating in all areas. They were seeking a playoff berth and anything other than a win would be lights out. But without superstar Omar Rashid in the lineup, Red was outmatched. And at the sound of the buzzer, Orange was victorious by a 2-0 margin and now would need to wait for the other four teams to play. Was Red's play simply a result of a few too many on a hot summer's day? Or did they just not have enough to play for? We'll find out soon enough because they play a team with likely the most depth going in.
And play they did…well only Burgundy did at least in the next game. With destiny in their own hands, Burgundy came out smoking and handed Gold its third straight loss to clinch the second seed. Gold has not won a game since prior to the trade deadline, however, they’ve also not had their regular tender between the pipes and has been awfully short-benched recently.
With only one playoff spot left, Orange had all eyes on the final game of the regular season between Blue and Teal . Blue had already been eliminated earlier in the night with Orange defeating Red . Would they now return the favor by caving to the “hot-one-day, cold-the-next” Teal team? How would Teal respond to a must win game? Well, before any of them could think of a response, they were down 2-0 on 3 shots! With Orange players heckling the Teal tender, it seemed like the game was being played in Montreal rather than Triwood. Down 3-0, Teal answered with a single goal and eventually fell by a 4-1 score and dashed were the dreams of a repeat. With both of last year’s finalists looking in from the outside, was it the lack of trades that ultimately sank their teams? Many questions to be addressed in the early offseason.
But onto the match-ups. An unofficial poll suggests that after going to game 3, Gold’s top six will lead them to the finals over a hard fought, physical affair against Orange . The play between the pipes will likely determine the result of the second series with veteran against rookie. Poll results have Red and their offensive fire power losing in three to depth driven and patient Burgundy players.
Good luck in the playoffs, boys!
Come support the league and watch some great action beginning tonight as the PHL Cup is up for grabs!

One more Sunday remains in the regular season and what a Sunday it will be. The Points Leader and Verardi Award (for most goals scored) races will come to an end. Rookie sensation Sandeep Khangura leads in both categories with 13G, 11A in 10GP. Followed by rejuvinated Bobby Walker with 8G, 12A. Jasdeep Braich is having a great sophmore season with 11G and has his eyes set on burying a few in the final game and more importantly helping his team clinch a playoff birth.
Speaking of which, what a playoff race! Only Gold and Red have clinched playoff births, with Gold going in as the top seed. From there on in, the playoff picture is quite blurry with the four remaining teams all in contention for the final two spots.
In case of a standings tie in points, the tie breaks are as follows: (1)Wins, (2)Season Series record, (3)Goal Differential.
Ready for the all the possible scenarios? Well here are just a few. Let's start with the simple ones first.
Only Burgundy and Teal control their own fates. "Win and in".
The next simple equation is for Blue, a win AND an Orange loss guarantees them the fourth seed.
Orange needs help is the simple answer. A win combined with a Burgundy tie or loss OR a Teal tie or loss secures a spot. OR an Orange tie and a Teal loss and they are in. Or in other words, a loss and they are definitely out!
And remember how only Burgundy and Teal control their own fates? Well they could still sneak in without wins. A Teal tie combined with an Orange tie or loss OR Burgundy loss still gets them in.
Even if Burgundy loses they can get in with either Teal and Orange losing. But if Burgundy ties and both Teal and Orange win, Burgundy will call it a season.
A lot remains undecided, but rest assured two teams will be refunded their jersey deposits.
Where have all the trades gone? After a season filled with player movement beginning at the draft when picks were exchanged, many were left pondering what team they would be playing for going into this past weekend. But nothing. Not even a single trade! There were phone calls made about specific players, but teams were not budging. With the standings so close, captains were all buyers and with no sellers to transact with, the deadline came and went like Big Macs and Apple Pies on a summer day. That being said, there were still over 20 player movements during the season, with only Blue and Teal opting to stick it out with their original drafted teams. Or perhaps they simply couldn't find partners for the dance.
