With the regular season coming to an end, to say that Sunday’s games have playoff implications would be an understatement! At this point, only Team Blue and Teal have clinched playoff spots and neither will finish lower than the 2nd seed.
Then things get interesting, as Team Orange, Gold, and Burgundy are vying for the 3rd and 4th spots. Team Red has officially been eliminated from playoff contention, but could play spoiler for someone this week. Gold will clinch with either a win over Red or a Burgundy tie/loss as they have the season series over Burgundy in case of a tie. As for Burgundy, they need a victory over Teal and some help from either Red or Blue.
Team Orange currently sits in 3rd place and will gain a playoff spot by a victory over 1st place Blue, who is on a 3 game losing streak, being shut out the last two games. However, Orange could qualify even prior to their game vs. Blue with either a Gold loss or a Burgundy loss. If Gold wins, Burgundy ties, and Orange loses then Gold qualifies and Burgundy will also qualify due to the tie break over Orange. Want a final scenario? If Gold and Orange both lose and Burgundy ties, and because Gold holds the season series over Burgundy, and Burgundy holds the season series over Orange, while Orange holds the season series over Gold, we go to goal differential!
Wow, what a finish! Oh wait, there’s also the Points Leader and Gio Verardi Memorial Awards to be determined as there are several players tied for most points and goals.
Also, a reminder to those players not moving onto the playoffs to return your jerseys for your deposits.
Talk about a crowd! The home Czech crowd made the finals game an atmosphere only few every experience.
Both teams came out flying, but the goalies were both equal to the task. The Czechs seemed to have more odd man rushes, but Rav Hundal was very solid. India opened the scoring off a great feed from behind the net as Smiter Kaila beat the Czech goalie just over four minutes in. However, it was very short lived as the Czechs replied within seconds with a point shot that made its way into the back of the net. The rest of the frame was a hard played back and forth exchange by the two teams. The referees let them play too. Then with a late faceoff won by India and a d to d pass to Smiter Kaila who wired the one timer past the Czech goalie for the 2-1 leading heading into the first intermission. A great game!
The second period started out with some great action as both teams had several scoring chances but the goalies both stood on their head! But it was only a matter of time before someone scored and the Czechs answered the bell. The Czech player burst past India's defense to have one shot stopped, but capitalized on the rebound and the game was tied just like that. Unfortunately for India, that goal seemed to ignite the home team as most of the play remained in India's zone for the rest of the middle period and Hundal was put under pressure...'mundey tey pressure na pao' could be heard throughout Calgary. But true to his form, the big goalie remained cool and calm backstopping the team into the final frame with a 2-2 tie. Then with just under 3 minutes remaining in the second period, the Czechs took a penalty which likely prevented an odd man rush for India as Boris Mostaghim was sent flying. Luckily he was able to shake things off and remain in the game. India went to work on the PP, but the Czech team's aggressive PK limited the scoring chances as they kept the play to the outside. It was shaping out to be a nail biter in the final frame.
The third period started with chippy play as the Czechs became more aggressive. And it paid off, as a faceoff win led to a point shot that beat Hundal giving the Czechs their first lead of the game, 3-2. India would have to battle back and through the clutching and grabbing if they were to wear the Gold. For most of the third, India was held without scoring opportunities, but the resiliency that has defined this team was at the forefront, as Sharny Kaila tied the game up late. India then had to battle through a late penalty to send the game to overtime tied 3-3.
OT started with Czech Republic on the PP, but India was able to kill it off. However, just minutes in, the dream ended as a Czech player picked the top corner with a perfect shot to win it for the home team. Over 6000 fans cheered for the 2009 World Champs.
A great showing for India as the Silver medalists who have a very bright future ahead. Like mentioned earlier...Team India has arrived on the world stage of ball hockey. Job well done boys!
India defeats USA in an offensive battle and faces Czech Republic Saturday 9:00am MST for the Gold!
Many were predicting this match up to be an offensive affair and it certainly did not disappoint. The Americans scored the opening goal with five minutes to go in the first period. However, India rallied back with a late first period goal and early second period goal from Dampy Brar, assisted by Smiter Kaila and Sharny Kaila. Down 2-1, the Americans began to flex their offensive muscles as they scored three straight goals to give USA a 4-2 lead, prompting India to pull the starting goalie for Rav Hundal and it seemed to give the team a boost as Smiter Kaila and Dampy Brar set up Raj Sandhu streaking in the slot to narrow the gap. But down 4-3, the hopes of a gold medal game birth hinged on India’s performance in the third period. After both teams exchanged some quality chances, Ricky Dusanj tied things up for India after Boris Mostaghim thread the needle to him in the high slot, where Dusanj turned and wired a shot past the American goalie. The crowd now could be heard cheering for the Indian team! Would we see last minute heroics again? With just 5 minutes remaining, Raj Sahota set up Pavan Basi to give the squad their second lead of the game. From there, the defensive game took over and India celebrated as the final buzzer sounded! The Americans outshot India in an exciting match up. Although guaranteed at least a Silver medal, India will be laying it all out in tomorrow’s Gold medal game against the host team. It will be a hostile crowd, no doubt, backing the Czechs who will be looking for their second Gold medal. But India will be looking for redemption after a late second loss to these same Czechs in pool play.
Go INDIA Go!

Almost there...India advances to the semis with a late game victory over Italy!
Team India is heading to the semi finals and will finish at least 4th, which surpasses the team's previous best effort of 6th place, back in 2006 in Pittsburgh, PA. But it didn't come easy. India beat out Italy with some late minute, err, late second heroics! The Italians opened the scoring, but the lead was only momentarily held as Jordan Chowsen tied things up, assisted by both Smiter and Sharny Kaila at the ten minute mark of the first period. Harpreet Kalkat scored late in the second period assisted by Sharny Kaila to give the Indian squad a 2-1 lead with only one period away from the semis. The Italians scored mid-way through the third period to even the game up, but then heroics! With less than a dozen seconds remaining, Kalkat became a hero with his second of the game as he received a great pass from Jordan Chowsen and wired a shot behind the Italian goalie to give India the 3-2 victory! Kalkat currently leads the team in scoring with 8pts (4G, 4A). Game highlights to follow at http://stream5.visual.cz/MSHokejbal/IND_ITA_18062009.wmv
India now plays Team USA in the semi-finals tomorrow at 11:30am MST. http://www.pilsen2009.com/zobraz_eng.asp?t=webcast
The American squad, however, knows a little about heroics as Steve Gregory scored in OT to leave Team Canada stunned without a medal for the first time ever, ending a bid for a fifth straight Gold. The other semi-finals matchup features Slovakia vs. host Czech Republic at 9:00am MST, also webcasted.
